Mabel Lee is Adjunct Professor of Chinese Studies at the University of Sydney and Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities. Her early research focused on late 19th and early 20th century Chinese intellectual history and literature, but since the late 1980s she has turned to introducing contemporary Chinese writers and artists to the English-speaking world. She is best known for her translations of 2000 Nobel Laureate Gao Xingjian’s novels Soul Mountain (2000) and One Man’s Bible (2002), and 1999 Flaiano Prize for Poetry winner Yang Lian’s Masks and Crocodile (1990), The Dead in Exile (1990) and his major work Yi (2002).
