H. J. (Henning) Pieterse (b. 1960) is a poet, short story writer and translator. Alruin [Mandrake] (1989) received the Ingrid Jonker Prize and the Eugène Marais Prize, and Die burg van hertog Bloubaard [Duke Bluebeard's Castle] (2000) was awarded the prestigious Hertzog Prize. have been published in anthologies and literary magazines. Henning Pieterse was editor and annotator of John Boje's translation of some of Chaucer's Canterbury
Tales into Afrikaans ('n Keur uit die Pelgrimsverhale van Geoffrey
Chaucer, 1989). Pieterse has translated Rainer Maria Rilke's Duineser Elegien into Afrikaans (Rilke: Duino-elegieë, 2007). This book was awarded the Nedbank Academy Prize for Translation. Pieterse has been a participant in many international events, including: Poetry International, Rotterdam (2001), "Dichters in het Elzenveld", Antwerp (2001), A Festival of Contemporary Writing in Africa, Kampala (2005), and the PEN "Literature Live" Festival, Zagreb (2006). His poems and short stories have been translated into English, Dutch, German, French, Croatian, Turkish, Sepedi and isiZulu. He was Editor-in-Chief of Tydskrif vir Letterkunde [Journal of Literature] (1993-2003) and is currently Professor and Head of the Unit for Creative Writing, University of Pretoria
