Jenni Calder was born Jennifer Rachel Daiches to a Scottish-born mother and English-born Jewish father in Chicago, one of America's great melting-pot cities. She has lived in Edinburgh for over 20 years. In April 2004, Calder travelled to Canada to help promote her book Scots in Canada. Her biography, Not Nebuchadnezzer, is a series of essays on the nature of identity and self. In Scots in the USA, Calder charts the experiences of Scottish settlers across the Atlantic and explores the relationship that exists today between Americans and their ancestors from Scotland.
