John Haynes spent the main part of his working life in Nigeria at Ahmadu Bello University. He now lives in Hampshire with his Nigerian born wife and family, teaching creative writing and poetry courses with the WEA and Poetry Studio which he directs.
He has published three volumes of poetry, Sabon Gari (London Magazine Editions), First the Desert Came, and Then the Torturer, (RAG Press, Nigeria), and Letter to Patience (Seren), which won the Costa Award in 2006. A new book length poem, You, is due from Seren in 2010. He has also written children’s fiction and books about language and teaching. At present he is working on a collection, Accompanying, on the theme of parents and children.
