Paul Letiwa was born in 1982 in the village of Loruko, in Samburu West District, Northern Kenya . His first language is Samburu and he also speaks fluent Kiswahili and English. He was educated at Maralal Primary School and Kirisia High School in the town of Marala, after which he studied journalism at Nairobi Aviation College. He is currently pursuing a degree in Print Journalism at Nairobi University while also working as a journalist with the Nation Media Group. He has written extensively on issues affecting pastoral communities in Northern Kenya, such as the Samburu people. His short story ‘Kidonda cha Moyo’ [‘The Wound of the Heart’], which focuses on child abuse, has appeared in the anthology Shingo ya Mbunge [Neck of a Legislator], Nairobi, 2008. The title of this anthology refers to a story by Kyallo Wamitila, which tackles corruption and the false promises commonly made by African politicians during election campaigns.
