Clifford Ando is David B. and Clara E. Stern Distinguished Service Professor and Professor of Classics and of History at the University of Chicago. He specializes in the histories of religion, law and government in the Roman Empire and the Roman tradition. Recent books include Roman Social Imaginaries. Language and thought in contexts of empire (2015); Religion et gouvernement dans l'Empire romain (2016); and, with William P. Sullivan, The Discovery of the Fact (2020). Together with Camilla Mackay, Ando is senior editor of Bryn Mawr Classical Review, and edits the book series Empire and After, published by the University of Pennsylvania Press.
