Attack of the No-See-Ums

You know they’re there
but you have no proof
You can feel them
rummaging through your heart
stealing what they can carry
They work from the inside so there’s no evidence,
no prints,
nothing to hang them on

The No-see-ums are devious
They strike at the worst possible times
like when you’re on the make
or on the mike
or both
If you tell anyone the No-see-ums are attacking you
they might say you got a screw loose
they might say you lost it
But you’ll feel the No-see-ums in the back of your mind
forcing their way in
planning to steal some ideas

People might say you’re nuts
if you tell them the No-see-ums are messing with your head
but when you hear the door bust open, and footsteps
between your ears,
you’ll know they’re there
