Pierre-Albert Jourdan (1924-1981) has long been one of the best-kept secrets of French literature. He is especially considered to be a master of the aphorism and other kinds of short poetic prose. His collected writings have been published by Mercure de France in two volumes: Les Sandales de paille (The Straw Sandals, 1987) and Le Bonjour et l’adieu (The Good Morning and the Farewell, 1991), respectively prefaced by Yves Bonnefoy and Philippe Jaccottet. Work by Jourdan, in John Taylor's translations, has appeared in the Antioch Review, American Letters & Commentary, the Yale Review, the Packingtown Review, The Bitter Oleander, Kestrel, Poetry Wales, FragLit, 1913: A Journal of Forms, and Cerise Press. |
