Four Poems

Loco poeta

El poeta, loco que es
camina a la orilla
del precipicio del significado
buscando una verdad más elevada
esperando que las palabras
como abejas rumbo a la colmena
lo guie a ella.
El costal que lleva en una vara
está lleno de palabras y trucos
más de lo que jamás usará.
La rosa no es sólo una rosa
sino metáfora de ¿qué?
Lilas a la puerta son abril.
Soñador, visionario, loco
el perro del hecho mundano
le muerde los talones,
le desgarra los calzones,
le expone el culo al aire
recordándole de que para lo que
busca no hay palabra que cuadre.

Fool Poet

The poet, fool that he is
walks the edge
of the precipice of meaning
looking for a higher truth
hoping the words
like homing bees
will lead him to it.
The bag he carries on a stick
is full of words & tricks
more than he will ever use.
The rose is not just a rose
but a metaphor for what?
Lilacs by the door are April.
Dreamer, visionary, fool,
the dog of mundane fact
snaps at his heels,
tears his pants,
exposes his butt to the air
reminding him that for what
he seeks no word can fit.

Nuestra Señora en llamas

Nuestra Señora de París está en llamas
como si las palmas de ayer espontáneamente
arrancaran en hosannas ardientes
y ningún espíritu benigno jorobado
llegó al campanario a tocar la gran campana.
Las gárgolas demonios
guardan su estoico silencio
como si muy en casa en el infierno;
el coro canta con lenguas pentecostales,
las casullas bailan con ancianas salamandras
y los vidríales rosados brillan
con un festejo de llamas.
Arde Nuestra Señora de París
anciana dama de sueños y salmos,
arde como una vez en su plaza ardió
la doncella de Orleáns, arde
como auguro alarmante
en estos tiempos feroces y crueles.

Notre Dame in Flames

Notre Dame du Paris is in flames
as if yesterday’s palms spontaneously
burst into flaming hosannas
& no benign hunch-back ghost
came to the belfry to ring the great bell.
The gargoyle demons
keep their stoic silence
as if very much at home in the inferno;
the choir sings with Pentecostal tongues,
the chasubles dance with ancient salamanders
& the rose windows glow
with a festival of flames.
Our Lady of Paris burns,
ancient lady of dreams & of psalms,
burns as once in its plaza burned
the maid of Orleans, burns
like an alarming augury
in these fierce & cruel times.

Mis dos monturas

Dos monturas tengo yo
que me han llevado
por el camino
que he tomado.
Uno se llama Pegaso,
el otro es Rocinante.
Uno me ha llevado
a las cumbres más altas
y el otro en mi lucha
contra gigantes.
Me son fieles
y fieles uno al otro.
A veces los confundo
y ahora creo que el alado
es mi Rocinante.

My Two Mounts

Two mounts have I
that have carried me
on the road
I have taken.
One is named Pegasus,
the other is Rocinante.
One has taken me
to the highest summits
& the other in my battle
with giants.
They are loyal to me
& loyal to each other.
Sometimes I confuse them
& now I believe the winged one
is my Rocinante.

Filosofía

a John H. Haddox

Arreglar la vida en
las repisas limpias de la razón
no es juego leve,
pero llamarle vedad a tal
es un tipo de locura.
El vivir tiene una maraña oscura
de raíces imposible de separar.
Olvídalo; llámale a la filosofía
por el juego que es
y abraza el desorden.
Marca tu lugar en Aquino
con el ala de una mariposa
encontrada justo fuera de la puerta
y arriba pone a Vasconcelos marcado
con una hoja cuyo rubor mortal
te hizo detenerte a recogerla.
Luego cubre ambos bajo cartas de amor
y recortes sujetados con una piedra
cuya forma y tacto deleite la mano.
La vida no es aseada, ni lo es el amor;
el pensar sin la compassion
es instrumento para nada que valga hacerse.
Mientras juegues el juego recuerda:
Una cosa es saber,
otra es ser sabio.

Philosophy

for John H. Haddox

To arrange life upon
the neat shelves of reason
is no mean game,
but to call such truth
is a kind of madness.
Living has a chthonic tangle
of roots impossible to sort.
Forget about it; call philosophy
for the game it is
and embrace the clutter.
Mark your place in Aquinas
with a butterfly’s wing
found just outside the door
and on top lay Vasconcelos marked
with a leaf whose death-flush
made you stop to pick it.
Then bury both under love-notes
and clippings held down with a rock
whose shape and feel delight the hand.
Life is not tidy, nor is love;
thought without compassion
is a tool for nothing worth the making.
While you play the game, remember:
It is one thing to know,
another to be wise.

Four times nominated for a Pushcart Prize, he was honored by the National Council of Teachers of English for his writing in 2003; in 2013 received a César E.
